Nomads
Last month our documentary short Nomads had its big screen premiere at the Regent Street Cinema in London. It was screened as part of the London Surf Film Festival alongside some of the best examples of surf filmmaking from around the world.
The film has also been featured by UK surf clothing brand Finisterre and was picked up by surf brand Animal for a sponsored screening at Purbeck Film Festival.
The short (which was two years in the making!) profiles the life of Sam, a surfer from the Gower Peninsula who lives in his van, and explores the relationship between the lifestyle he leads and the natural cycles of climate and ocean. The making of this film was a lesson in slow filmmaking, as described by director Jonny Campbell:
“The narrative of the film is built around the idea that Sam has adapted his lifestyle in order to align himself with the patterns of the sea and the weather, which are often unpredictable in changeable! The approach to making the film required this same approach - it involved patience, perseverance; not rushing or settling for shots that didn’t tell the story fully but rather waiting for the perfect conditions to capture the footage we wanted.”
Ym mis Hydref cafodd ein ffilm ddogfen fer, Nomads, ei ddangosiad cyntaf yn Regent Street Cinema yn Llundain. Cafodd ei ddangos fel rhan o London Surf Film Festival ochr yn ochr ag enghreifftiau gorau o gynyrchiadau ffilm syrffio yn fyd eang.
Mae’r ffilm hefyd wedi cael ei arddangos gan frand dillad syrffio Finisterre, yn y DU, a chafodd ei ddewis gan frand syrffio Animal mewn dangosiad noddedig yng Purbeck Film Festival.
Mae’r ffilm fer (a gafodd ei chynhyrchu dros gyfnod o ddwy flynedd) yn cyflwyno bywyd Sam, syrffiwr o’r Gwŷr sy’n byw yn ei fan, ac sy’n edrych ar y berthynas rhwng ei ffordd unigryw o fyw a chylch naturiol hinsawdd a’r môr. Roedd creu’r ffilm yma yn wers mewn ffilmio araf, fel y mae'r cyfarwyddwr Jonny Campbell yn ei ddisgrifio:
“Mae naratif y ffilm yn cwmpasu’r syniad fod Sam wedi ei addasu ei ffordd o fyw er mwyn unioni ei huna phatrymau’r môr a’r tywydd, sydd yn aml yn gyfnewidiol, ac anodd ei ragweld! Roedd ein dull o gynhyrchu’r ffilm yn gofyn i ni feddwl yn debyg iawn i’r tywydd - gan olygu fod rhan i ni fod yn amyneddgar, gymryd pwyll, peidio bodloni ar saethiadau oedd ddim yn cyfleu’r stori i gyd, a disgwyl am yr amodau perffaith i ddal y lluniau yr oeddem ei angen.”
